Look closely at this photograph.
It was taken in 1946 on the factory floor of Lieber's Luggage Shops in Cleveland, Ohio. The man who made this operation run was Sam Fine — the trusted friend and business partner of founder Max Lieber, who had taken ownership of the company three years earlier in 1943.
Around him, his workers stand at long wooden workbenches, hands busy, bags stacked and in progress. This was not a warehouse. This was a workshop. Every piece of luggage that left this floor was built by people who took pride in what they made.

In an era before mass overseas manufacturing, before flat-pack retail, before luggage became a commodity — Lieber's Luggage was making it themselves.
The bags stacked in the center of the frame are mid-century hardside cases, the kind that traveled on ocean liners and prop planes, that got checked at train stations and carried across continents. They were built to last because they had to be. There was no fast fashion equivalent in luggage. You bought a bag, and you kept it.
Sam Fine understood this. He ran the Cleveland operation with the same philosophy Max Lieber had instilled from the beginning: manufacture quality travel goods and sell them at a fair price. No shortcuts. No compromises.
The Hands Behind the Name
What strikes us most about this photo is not the bags — it's the people.
These are the workers who built the Lieber's name with their hands. They showed up every day to a factory floor in Cleveland and made something real. Their craftsmanship is the foundation that every generation of Lieber's ownership has stood on since.
Sam ran this operation until around 1989, when the original Cleveland store eventually closed. But the name — and the standard — never disappeared. His grandson, Frank Fine, had grown up in that store, absorbing everything. And when Frank moved to Albuquerque in the late 1970s, he brought the Lieber's name with him.
The Same Standard, A New Era
Today, Dustin and Felicia Boyd carry that standard forward from Albuquerque, New Mexico.
The Lieber's Legacy Collection — assembled in the USA — is a direct continuation of what Sam Fine and his team were doing on that factory floor in 1946. Hardside construction. Precision craftsmanship. Built to go the distance.
The materials have evolved. The wheels spin in eight directions now. But the commitment to building something worth owning — something you keep — is exactly the same as it was in that Cleveland workshop eighty years ago.
