120 Years of Lieber's Luggage: From Cleveland to Albuquerque

Some stores sell luggage. Lieber's Luggage is luggage. There's a difference — and it goes back 120 years.

Cleveland, 1906: Where It All Started

In 1906, two German-American entrepreneurs — Max Lieber and Sam Fine — opened Lieber's Luggage on Euclid Avenue in Cleveland, Ohio. Euclid Avenue was the address in Cleveland at the time: a grand boulevard lined with the mansions of industrialists, a street that locals called "Millionaires' Row." It was the right place to sell quality travel goods to people who actually traveled.

The partnership worked. Lieber's became a trusted name in Cleveland, built on the simple idea that the bag you carry says something about how seriously you take the journey.

Eventually, Sam Fine bought out his partner Max Lieber — but he kept the name. The Lieber's name had earned its reputation, and Sam wasn't about to let that go.

A Family Tradition Takes Root

Sam Fine understood that a great business isn't just built — it's passed down. He taught the trade to his grandson, Frank Fine, who turned out to have a natural gift for it. Frank didn't just learn the business; he lived it. He understood luggage the way a craftsman understands his tools — the construction, the hardware, the way a good bag holds up over years of hard use.

In 1978, Frank made a bold move: he brought Lieber's Luggage to Albuquerque, New Mexico. The Ohio store closed in 1980, but the tradition didn't die with it. It just found a new home — miles from the historic Route 66 corridor, in the high desert of the Southwest, where travelers have always passed through on their way somewhere worth going.

Albuquerque turned out to be a perfect fit. A city with deep roots, a strong sense of place, and people who appreciate things built to last.

2003: A New Chapter Begins

In 2003, a young man named Dustin Boyd walked into Lieber's Luggage and never really left. He learned everything he could from Frank Fine and his wife Leslee — not just the products, but the philosophy. The importance of knowing what you're selling. The value of honest advice. The difference between a bag that looks good on a shelf and one that holds up on the road.

Frank and Leslee passed the torch to Dustin, and he carried it forward. Today, Dustin and his wife Felicia Boyd own and operate Lieber's Luggage at 6515 Menaul Blvd NE, Albuquerque, NM 87110 — keeping the same standard that Max Lieber and Sam Fine set on Euclid Avenue more than a century ago.

The Luggage Lab: American Ingenuity at Work

Dustin and Felicia didn't just maintain the tradition — they expanded it. Under their ownership, Lieber's launched the Luggage Lab: a private-label line of travel gear designed and assembled in the USA, built for real travelers who want real performance.

The flagship of the Lab is the Legacy Collection — hardside spinners assembled in America, built with 8-wheel spinner systems, and finished with a free custom monogram. These aren't off-the-shelf bags with a logo slapped on. They're the result of decades of knowing what travelers actually need.
