Max Lieber's Legacy: From Cleveland to Albuquerque to Your Doorstep

Max Lieber's Legacy: From Cleveland to Albuquerque to Your Doorstep

Some stories are too good to stay buried in a filing cabinet.

This is the story of a German-American immigrant who built something from nothing, a friendship that outlasted a business partnership, a family that carried a name across generations, and two people in Albuquerque who decided to bring it all the way back home.

This is Max Lieber's Legacy.

Cleveland, 1906: Where It All Began

Max Lieber arrived in America with the drive of a man who had something to prove. In 1906, in Cleveland, Ohio, he founded Lieber's Luggage Shops alongside his business partner and close friend, Sam Fine. Together they built a retail institution rooted in a simple, unshakeable idea: manufacture and sell quality travel goods at a fair price.

For decades, Lieber's Luggage was a Cleveland landmark. Max wasn't just selling bags — he was equipping people for the journeys of their lives.

Sam Fine Carries the Torch

In 1943, after a falling out with a business partner, Max sold the entire Lieber's Luggage operation to his closest friend, Sam Fine. Sam — a fellow German-American entrepreneur — ran the original Cleveland location with the same dedication Max had instilled, keeping the name and the standard alive for decades before the store eventually closed around 1989.

Sam Fine's grandson, Frank Fine, grew up working in that Cleveland store. The smell of leather, the weight of a well-made bag, the art of fitting a customer with exactly the right piece of luggage — it was all in his blood.

Frank Fine Brings Lieber's to the 505

Frank moved to Albuquerque in the late 1970s. And when it came time to put his name on a store, there was only one name that made sense.

In 1978, Frank formally adopted the Lieber's Luggage name — partly for its alliteration, partly for its deep industry cachet, and partly because it was the right way to honor the legacy Sam Fine had passed down to him. Albuquerque had a new luggage destination, and the 505 would never be the same.

Under Frank's stewardship, Lieber's became New Mexico's premier travel goods destination — a place where locals knew they could walk in, get real advice from someone who actually knew luggage, and walk out with exactly what they needed.

Dustin Boyd: The Next Chapter

In 2002, a young man named Dustin Boyd walked through the doors of Lieber's Luggage looking for a job. He started as a sales associate, learned the craft from the ground up, worked his way into management, and eventually did what few employees ever do: he bought the place.

Dustin and his wife Felicia — who brought her own formidable expertise from years as a partner at a local Albuquerque law firm — took the reins together. And from day one, they knew exactly what they wanted to do with them.

Back to the Roots: Manufacturing and Retail, Reunited

Max Lieber's original vision was never just retail. It was manufacturing quality travel goods and selling them directly to the people who needed them — cutting out the middleman, standing behind the product, and building something that lasted.

Dustin and Felicia have brought that vision back to life.

The Lieber's Legacy Collection — assembled right here in the USA — is the direct expression of Max's founding philosophy. Hardside polycarbonate shells. Eight precision spinner wheels. Expandable packing capacity. And a free custom monogram on every bag, because a Lieber's bag should feel like yours.

Pair any Legacy bag with the Lieber's Legacy Packing Cube Set — designed to fit the Legacy line perfectly — and the Lieber's 3-Pack Roll-Up Compression Bags to maximize every inch of space.

A Trusted National Name, Once Again

We are proud to share that Lieber's Luggage can once again be found on the shelves of specialty luggage dealers across the nation.

Max Lieber built a name that meant something. Sam Fine protected it. Frank Fine carried it to New Mexico. And now, Dustin and Felicia Boyd are sharing it with the country.

That is not just a business story. That is a legacy.
