The 5 Golden Rules of Luggage: What 48 Years on Menaul Boulevard Taught Us

Here at the shop, our team spends countless hours testing travel gear to see how it actually holds up in the real world. Since Lieber's Luggage first opened its doors in 1978, we've seen every travel trend imaginable come and go. We've seen the rise of hard shells, the evolution of smart bags, and the endless debate over packing cubes.

But after outfitting New Mexico travelers for 48 years, we've realized that the secret to a stress-free trip usually comes down to a few basic rules. Whether you're flying out of the Sunport for a quick weekend or packing up for a month-long European vacation, these are the five golden rules of travel gear we wish every traveler knew.

1. Stop Dragging Your Spinners on Two Wheels

Spinners (four-wheel bags) are built to glide perfectly upright alongside you. When you tilt a heavy spinner and drag it behind you like an old-school two-wheeler, you are putting the entire weight of the bag onto two tiny back wheels that weren't designed to take that specific angle. The result? You melt the bearings, wear down the rubber unevenly, and end up with a bag that drifts sideways.

The Rule: Keep all four wheels on the ground in the airport. If you are heading somewhere with brutal cobblestones, buy a dedicated two-wheel rollaboard instead. 2. Pack the Heavy Stuff Over the Wheels

When you pack your shoes, toiletry bags, and heavy electronics at the top of the suitcase, the center of gravity shifts too high.

The Rule: Always put the heaviest items at the absolute bottom of the bag, right over the wheels. The bag will roll smoother, feel lighter in your hand, and actually stay standing when you let go of the handle. 3. Never Trust a Luggage Tag Without the Wheels

Airlines are getting stricter by the day with carry-on sizers. One of the biggest heartbreaks we see is a traveler buying a "carry-on" online because the tag says it measures 21 inches — only to get to the gate and realize the manufacturer didn't include the wheels or the top handle in those measurements, making it 23 inches and forcing a gate-check.

4. Don't Force the Corners

Zippers are the engine of your suitcase. If they break, the bag is dead. Most zipper blowouts happen at the corners because of overstuffing. If you have to sit on your suitcase and yank the zipper around the top corners with all your body weight, you are stretching the coil and putting massive torque on the teeth.

The Rule: If the zipper resists at the corner, stop. Use compression cubes to squish the clothes down, or just take one sweater out. 5. Know When to Fix It, and When to Pass It On

A good piece of luggage is an investment, and most parts (like a jammed handle or a sticky wheel) are fixable. But if a hard shell frame actually cracks, or a soft-sided frame is bent entirely out of shape, it's time to retire it.

However, if your bag is just a little scuffed up, or maybe you finally upgraded to a newer model and your old one is just sitting in the closet, don't throw it away! Bring it into the store.
