Briggs & Riley Baseline 26 inch Medium Softside Expandable Spinner with Suiter

Why the Briggs & Riley Baseline 26" Is the Last Checked Bag You'll Ever Buy

There's a version of luggage shopping where you buy a bag, use it for a few years, watch it fall apart, and buy another one. Repeat indefinitely. Most luggage is designed for exactly this cycle.

Then there's Briggs & Riley.

The Briggs & Riley Baseline 26" Medium Softside Expandable Spinner is not a bag you replace. It's a bag you hand down. And at $859, it's the kind of purchase that sounds expensive until you do the math on how many cheap bags you've already bought.

The Warranty That Changes Everything

Before we talk about the bag itself, we need to talk about the warranty — because it's unlike anything else in the luggage industry.

Briggs & Riley offers a lifetime guarantee on every bag they make. Not a limited warranty. Not a "defects in materials and workmanship" clause with a list of exclusions. A lifetime guarantee that covers any functional problem, including damage caused by airlines. If a zipper fails, they fix it. If a wheel cracks, they fix it. If an airline destroys the handle, they fix it. No receipt required. No questions asked.

In 30+ years of making luggage, Briggs & Riley has never discontinued a product line — which means parts are always available and repairs are always possible. That's not a marketing claim. That's a business model built around making bags that last.

We've carried Briggs & Riley at Lieber's for years. We've seen customers come back with bags they bought a decade ago, get them repaired, and walk out good as new. The warranty is real.

The Bag Itself

The Baseline 26" is built around ballistic nylon — the same fabric originally developed for military body armor. It's extraordinarily resistant to abrasion, tearing, and the general abuse of baggage handling. The weave is tight, the coating is durable, and it holds up to years of hard travel in a way that polycarbonate and polyester simply don't.

At 26 inches, it's the sweet spot for checked luggage — large enough for a week-plus trip, small enough to stay under most airline weight limits when packed thoughtfully. The CX® expansion system adds meaningful capacity when you need it: press the buttons, pull up the sides, and the bag expands from 80 to 97 liters. When you're ready to compress, push down and zip. It's intuitive and genuinely useful.

The Suiter System

The built-in tri-fold garment folder is one of the Baseline's standout features for business travelers. It holds one to two suits with a foam roll bar that prevents wrinkling during transit. If you've ever arrived at a conference or a wedding with a suit that looks like it spent 6 hours in a ball, you understand why this matters.

The garment panels envelop your clothing with minimal creasing, and cinching the straps adds compression to reduce shifting in transit. It's a thoughtful system that works — not just a marketing feature.

The Hardware

Every component on the Baseline 26" is specified to last:

  • Aircraft-grade aluminum telescoping handle with a V-groove impact-resistant design and multiple stop heights — engineered to survive the kind of drops and impacts that bend lesser handles permanently
  • Proprietary shock-absorbing spinner wheels with 360° maneuverability — quiet, smooth, and built to roll on surfaces that would destroy standard wheels
  • Self-repairing YKK® RC zippers with lockable double pulls — YKK is the gold standard in zipper manufacturing, and the self-repairing design means minor snags don't become permanent failures
  • Substantial corner-guard protection using impact-resistant material at the most vulnerable points of the bag
  • SmartLink™ strap for attaching a second bag — practical for travelers who carry both a checked bag and a personal item

The SpeedThru™ Pocket

The signature orange-lined front pocket is one of those features you don't appreciate until you use it. It's designed for quick access at security checkpoints — your laptop, your liquids bag, your documents — without having to open the main compartment. The orange lining is a visual cue that the pocket is open, so you don't accidentally leave it unzipped. Small detail. Big difference.

Five Colors. Free Monogram.

The Baseline 26" comes in Black, Navy, Olive, Steel Gray, and Plum — all at $859. Every bag purchased at Lieber's includes a free custom monogram, making it unmistakably yours at the baggage carousel and adding a personal touch that turns a great bag into your bag.

Why We Carry Briggs & Riley

We've been selling luggage in Albuquerque for over 45 years. In that time, we've carried a lot of brands — and we've watched a lot of brands come and go. Briggs & Riley has been around since 1993 and has never wavered on quality or warranty. That consistency is rare in this industry, and it's why they've earned a permanent place on our floor.

There's also a story that connects Briggs & Riley to Lieber's Luggage in a way that goes beyond retail. Richard Krulik, the CEO of U.S. Luggage LLC and co-owner of Briggs & Riley, is the grandson of Hans Ax — a Jewish refugee from Vienna who escaped Austria in 1939 with the help of an affidavit of sponsorship written on official Lieber's Luggage Shops letterhead by our founder, Max Lieber. Max sponsored Hans as a complete stranger, guaranteeing him a home and a monthly allowance. Hans went on to build a leather goods business in the U.S. His grandson Richard built Briggs & Riley into one of the finest luggage brands in the world.

The bags on our shelf carry that history with them. We think that's worth knowing.
