A broken handle.
Not the end of your bag.

Replace your Legacy top or side carry handle with the correct part and a few straightforward steps.

See the five steps

Before you start

This guide covers the fixed top and side carry handles on Lieber’s Legacy Collection luggage. It does not cover the telescoping pull handle.

Empty the suitcase and rest it securely on a flat surface. Confirm that your replacement handle matches the mounting points of the handle you are replacing.

What you’ll need

  • A Phillips-head screwdriver that fits the mounting screws securely.
  • The correct Legacy replacement carry handle.
  • A small tray for the four screws and washers.
  • A paperclip if the interior maintenance zipper has no pull tab.

Save all four screws and their washers. You’ll reuse them when installing the new handle. Take a photo of the hardware arrangement before removing it.

Replace your carry handle in five steps

1. Open the interior lining

Open the suitcase and locate the interior maintenance zipper. Unzip the lining to reach the inside of the shell behind the damaged top or side handle. If the zipper has no pull tab, use a paperclip to help move the slider. Do not cut the lining.

2. Remove the four screws and washers

Find the four mounting screws securing the carry handle from inside the suitcase. Support the handle on the outside while removing the screws and washers. Keep all hardware together in a tray and note how the washers were positioned.

3. Remove the broken handle

Once all four screws and washers are removed, lift the broken handle away from the outside of the shell. Compare the replacement with the old handle and check the shell and mounting holes for damage.

If the shell is cracked or the mounting points are damaged, stop and contact the Luggage Lab before continuing.

4. Fit the replacement and reinstall the hardware

Reverse the removal steps. Position the new handle on the outside of the suitcase and align its mounting points with the shell holes. From inside, reinstall the saved washers and all four screws in their original arrangement.

Start all four screws before tightening them gradually and evenly. The handle mounts should seat securely without being forced.

Hand-tighten only. Do not overtighten. If a screw will not engage or hold securely, stop rather than forcing it.

5. Check the handle and close the lining

With the suitcase empty, gently check that the handle and both mounting ends are secure. Make sure there is no looseness at the mounting points. Zip the maintenance lining completely closed once the repair is secure.

If you are replacing both the top and side handles, complete the same steps for each handle, keeping each handle’s hardware together.

If something doesn’t look right, stop.

Do not use the handle if the shell is cracked, a mounting hole is damaged, the replacement does not fit, or a screw will not hold. Contact the Luggage Lab for help with the next step.
