Foreign Outlet and Travel Adapter Guide
- What is an outlet adapter plug? It changes the plug shape of your appliance/device, not the electrical voltage. It permits you to plug a device into a wall outlet in another country with a different plug shape than the appliance you are trying to use.
- As an added precaution, and as some countries use more than one type of electrical outlet, you may want to contact the place at which you are staying to confirm what type of outlets are used.
- What is an electric converter? It changes the voltage of your electronic device.
- Most modern travel gadgets (including smartphones, laptops, and tablets) are dual-voltage. A dual voltage device will automatically convert to run on other voltage systems. This means that if you try to use a converter on a device that is already dual-voltage, you may end up irreversibly damaging your device.
- It is thus imperative for you to check the label or owner’s manual of your device to determine whether it is dual voltage.
- Language similar to “INPUT AC 120 VAC 60 Hz 200 W,” indicates a single-voltage device that may only be used on 120 V, and if you want to use it in another country, you may need a converter.
- Language similar to “INPUT AC 120/240 V 50—60 Hz 1300 W,” indicates the device is dual-voltage, and can be used for voltages between 120 V and 240 V. If this is the case, you’ll need only a plug adapter (see below for more details).

As some countries use more than one type of electrical outlet it is recommended to carry all the adaptors (grounded and non grounded) listed for each country.
